Do Chihuahuas Have Allergies?

Well, unfortunately, yes, Chihuahuas can have allergies. Dogs can have 2 types of allergies. Dog’s external allergy occurs most often. If your Chihuahua has an external allergy, then your pet is allergic to things from the outside of their own body, these might be dust, pollen etc. Most frequently Chihuahuas have allergy to dog shampoo.

But they also might have an internal allergy, this means that your dog has an allergy reaction to something from the inside of its body. This might be dog food or drugs. The easiest way to treat such allergy is to avoid the source of dog’s allergy.

But it’s not easy when you do not know yet what exactly makes your Chihuahua suffer. Dog’s allergies occur quite often, 20% of all dogs have it.

How to recognise an external allergy? Like we already said, it causes your dog to have an allergic reaction to something from the outside of its body. The most frequent symptom of such allergy is itching. Well, a dog might scratch because of fleas too, but if it hasn’t fleas, then it’s most likely an external allergy.

Internal allergies occurs of something that was ingested by your dog, it might cause coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath, a wheezing noise and expulsion of mucus from the dog's nose or mouth. Often dog have food allergy, it will cause vomiting and/or diarrhoea, which is not normal for a healthy dog. If you give your Chihuahua good and proper food, but the dog still have these symptoms, then it’s most likely a food allergy.

I logged onto www.Direct.tv and upgraded our television package to include HD channels. I can’t believe the difference that it makes. The other day the “Planet Earth” series was on the Discovery Channel. I watched the one that was the sea. It was definitely my favorite. The picture was so cool. I have always wondered what it would be like to be a sea creature. I think that if I could be any animal it would be a dolphin or something like a dolphin. Then, I could cruise around in the sea. I think that it would be wonderful to swim in tropical waters. I love all of the beautiful coral and tropical colored fish. What would be even cooler would to be able to swim around and explore old ship wrecks in the Carribean. I wonder what kind of treasures that you could find. Being able to swim around in the ocean and see it like a dolphin would be so much fun. I wonder if that is why mythical mermaids were created. Men have wondered for centuries what it would be like to explore the deep.

This is a story about a brave four pound chihuahua survived dreadful owl attack in Illinois.

A four-pound Chihuahua named Chico survived an attack by a great horned owl. The owner George Kalomiris says Chico was saved by his leash and the little doggie winter jacket that Kalomiris zipped him into before taking him out for a nighttime walk in Crystal Lake last week.

Kalomiris was walking Chico early last wednesday when the dog stopped about five feet behind him and began to whimper. He turned and tugged on the leash, but Chico wouldn’t move. Without a sound, an owl swooped down and tried to take Chico away.

Apparently, the owl just came out of nowhere in the darkness. It dragged Chico in the snow, but couldn’t get a good grip because of the sturdy winter jacket Chico was wearing.
chico’s winter jacket ended up saving saved him because it prevented the owl’s talons from digging in deeply enough to latch onto him. kalomiris then screamed at the bird and lunged at it. the owl let go and kalomiris grabbed chico and ran into the house with chico in his arms.

Chico’s head was scratched from getting dragged across the sidewalk and suffered a small puncture wound on his side. He has recovered physically, but now he’s afraid to go out at night, says Kalomiris.

We’re all about technology in our house, that’s for sure. I really wish my kids would just sit down sometimes and have a meal without their phones or texting or having the TV on in the background but I guess it’s my fault because I bought them the phones and the text messaging features and the http://www.tvbydirect.com/ channels. I’m all about being up on what’s new and current and I’ve got the best e-reader as well as a tablet, too, so it’s really not surprising that my kids are following suit. I really hope that they know technology really well by the time they hit the job market because I think that’s a skill that can’t be underestimated by hiring managers…they’re going to need every leg up they can get if the job market is anything like this one. I wish my husband was more technologically inclined but at the end of the day I’m happy we’re on the same page about whether or not the kids should be plugged in.

Place small, breakable ornaments high up, and keep tinsel and garland out of your pet's reach, as these can get caught in his throat. Alcoholic beverages, chocolate, coffee, onions, fatty foods, yeast dough and macadamia nuts can all cause problems.

It's not hard to train a puppy not to bark but it helps to understand how andwhy a Chihuahua puppy barks. You may be surprised to learn that puppies don't barkvery much during the first few weeks of their life. They spend their timenursing and sleeping during their first few weeks. It’s only a little later,once they start playing, that they start trying out a few barks. By the timeyour puppy is ready to go home with you around the age of 8 to 10 weeks he isbecoming more confident about barking. Once he settles into his new home yourpuppy can gain enough confidence to bark more frequently. Afterall, he now hashis own home to protect! This is when puppy barking may start to become aproblem and it is important that you start to train your puppy early.

Why Chihuahua Puppies Bark
Puppies bark for several reasons: They want attention They are frustrated(perhaps a toy has rolled under the furniture) They want to play They are boredor lonely They need to go outside And, sometimes a puppy just likes to hear thesound of his own voice. As your puppy gets older and feels more “in charge” ofthe household, he will probably bark when someone comes near the house to alertyou or out of a feeling of protection for you. If your puppy needs to gooutside or a toy is out of reach — in other words, if your puppy has a legitimatereason to bark because he’s telling you something — you should try to solve theproblem. Take him outside to potty, get his toy, and so on. However, there aretimes when your puppy’s barking is unnecessary. Your puppy will need to learnto stop barking when you tell him to stop.

Train Your Chihuahua Puppy to Stop Barking
For nuisance barking and other annoying barking from your pup, you can trythese methods for teaching your puppy not to bark:
1. The shake-can. This is one of the simplest and mildest ways to teach yourpuppy not to bark. You can use this method when your puppy is having a little barkfestand won’t stop barking. Take an empty can or soft drink bottle and put somepennies inside. They should make a good, loud rattle when you shake them. Tapeup the top of the can with duct tape or put the bottle lid back on the bottle.When your puppy starts barking and won’t stop, shake the can loudly at him.This should get his attention and he should stop barking for a moment. As soon ashe stops barking you should praise him and tell him he’s a good dog. Give him atreat. You’re giving him a reward for being quiet. Repeat this action wheneveryour puppy goes into his bark routine and the barking should diminish. Heshould start looking for the treat after one brief bark, at the very least.
2. The spray bottle. You can also use the spray bottle technique to teachyour puppy that barking is unwelcome. Buy some inexpensive spray bottles atyour local discount store. You can also use children’s water pistols. Keep thespray bottles filled with water and place them in various locations around yourhouse so they will be handy for you to use. When your puppy starts barking andwon’t stop, simply pick up a spray bottle and squirt him. You don’t need to soakhim or be mean to him. You are simply spraying him to get his attention. Assoon as he stops barking for a moment make sure that you give him a treat and praisehim for being a good boy for being quiet. With both methods the purpose is tostartle your puppy into being quiet. You are just getting his attention, nottrying to punish him. It’s just as important to praise your puppy when he stopsbarking as it is to get him to stop barking. You have to let him know what kindof good behavior you want him to follow instead of barking — in this case,being quiet. You can also teach your puppy the “Quiet” command when you givehim his treat in order to emphasize what it is that your puppy is learning.This will help your puppy associate not barking with the reward. If you followthese simple methods training your puppy not to bark should be very easy.

1. You should use positive reinforcement - young Chihuahuas are just like babies. They feel good inside any time they “get something right”. But still - they can’t understand that they got it right, they are able to do so only if you show them and praise them for doing things in a right way.

2. You should be consistent – sometimes people forget that dogs don’t speak your language and can’t understand it the way people can. They can learn a certain command through repetition of the same command word and then the praise they get for doing what you ask. If you are inconsistent and use different command words for the same action, this will just confuse your puppy.

3. You should become the alpha leader – it’s really important to show your puppy that you are the leader and the puppy is the follower before starting training your puppy. If you don’t, it will be the other way around and you will have a lot of trouble.

My Own Boss

Being your own boss is great, aside from having to pay for your own health insurance. I’m actually an artist but it’s more stable than you might think – most of my stuff is commissioned and it’s not like I have to go out into the park on Saturday and sell my stuff. I love being able to just go to my client’s house, give him his piece and use my merchant services and just ring up their credit cards right then and there. I just really relish the freedom of being able to go pick up my kids from school when they’re done and also grocery shopping in the middle of the day. I actually do my best painting early in the mornings so it’s nice to be able to really get work done the day I want to and call it a day. I can’t believe how much more productive I am now that I’m not sitting at a desk all day but I guess that’s what happens when you’re actually doing something you enjoy doing.

Poquito, a 2-year-old teacup Chihuahua, weighs 1 pound, 1 ounce. That is smaller than the Guinness world record-holder by 7 ounces.

“I get the same reaction everywhere I go: ‘Is that real?’ That is real ... look at that puppy dog’” Taylor said.

Her response? “It’s not a puppy dog.” That’s as big as he gets.

Taylor purchased Poquito (the name means “very little” in Spanish) when he was 11 months old, sight unseen, for $400 from a family near Hillsdale two years ago. Her goal was to find a small dog to breed with Fancy, her 5-year-old female Yorkshire Terrier.

The two dogs have been unsuccessful, but Taylor, a widow, has found a new best friend in the process. She says she spends 24/7 with both of her pets, but Poquito gets most of the attention.

“He’ll jump up and down like a yo-yo, wanting you to pick him up,” she said. When she sits down to read the newspaper or knit, “He bats it away. He wants full attention on him.”

He gets his wish when the two go out in public, drawing reactions from everyone they run into.

“This dog’s had its picture taken (so many times),” Taylor said. “People are always bringing their friends, relatives, neighbors, asking, ‘Can we see the dog?’”

Taylor said she realized just how distinctive her dog might be a few weeks ago while watching the news. A national story came on about Boo Boo, a female Chihuahua from Kentucky, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s smallest living dog. Records show her measuring 4 inches tall and 1 pound, 8 ounces.

Taylor says Poquito weighed 1 pound, 1 ounce during a Sept. 16 visit to Blackman Animal Clinic, 2300 Wildwood Ave.

Patrick J. Gorczyca, a veterinarian at the clinic, confirmed the measurement Wednesday. Still, Taylor says she has no interest in having Poquito recognized by Guinness.

Gorczyca says the average full-grown Chihuahua weighs anywhere from four to 10 pounds.

“While it is an abnormally small dog ... I’m not an extremist or reactionary person,” Gorczyca said, pointing out that people often breed animals to achieve a certain size. “I’m at that point in my career in which it doesn’t faze me.”

Taylor says she always puts Poquito on a leash when they go outside. She fears birds and seagulls will take him, recalling an incident outside her daughter’s home in which three seagulls circled her dog.

“I worry about hawks and seagulls,” she says. “I’ve had people with dogs bigger than mine say they’ve had seagulls come in and take the dog ... and you never see the dog again.”

When it comes to clothing Poquito, Taylor says she has all but given up. She’s tried a XXX-small sweater to no avail. Barbie doll clothes are too tight on the waist. Toy stores don’t carry bear and doll clothing in small enough sizes.

RURAL HALL, N.C. (WGHP)— Vanessa Calvery, a part-time personal chef since being laid off in January, was driving home from delivering meals on Tuesday evening when she saw a Chihuahua standing in the middle of a road near her house. It was pouring rain and, though stray dogs sometimes roam the streets near her neighborhood, Calvery has two Chihuahuas, and something about this dog made her stop the car.She got out in the downpour, bundled the dog into her car and brought him home.
The little dog wore no collar, but he looked loved, Calvery said.

"I could tell somebody owned him," Calvery said. "His whole demeanor -- you could tell he was somebody's pet."

Calvery brought the dog into her home. She cooked up some chicken and split the meat among the dog and her two Chihuahuas, Duke and Pisant. She made the dog a bed in her TV room with an old blanket.

Calvery hasn't had full-time work since the company she worked for laid her off Jan. 1. Her house is for sale; she hopes to move to Kentucky to be close to her twin sister. When she found the dog in the rain, she said, something moved her to take him in. It had been a hard year for her, and she knew that missing a dog would mean a hard time for someone else.

"I really needed a sign that good things are still out there," she said.

So as the rain fell Tuesday, Calvery settled down for the night and resolved to find the dog's owner.

Meanwhile, John Jenkins, a 67-year-old man who lives in Walkertown, was lying awake in bed. He hadn't slept in two nights, not since his truck was stolen from the parking lot of Walmart on Hanes Mill Road with his dog, Boo'kie, inside. Boo'kie, a 7-year-old Chihuahua, needed medication for a skin condition that caused him to bite and scratch his body, and Jenkins was worried about his pet.

Jenkins, too, needed medicine. He had stopped at Walmart on Monday morning to pick up a prescription. When he came back to the parking lot, his truck -- and Boo'kie -- were gone.

Jenkins was diagnosed with throat and esophageal cancer in May 2009; in June 2009, his wife passed away. Boo'kie had been his companion through both crises, and Jenkins didn't care if he got the truck back -- he just wanted Boo'kie home. Jenkins, his friends and his family had searched all of Monday and Tuesday, but when he went to bed Tuesday night, Boo'kie was still missing.

On Wednesday morning, Calvery called a few veterinarians' offices and a few friends. She called a friend who worked at the post office, "just trying to spread the word that this dog had been found," she said.

One of the dog's paws seemed swollen, and she was worried the dog was injured. She took the dog to Animal Care Clinic in Rural Hall, where she takes her own dogs.

One of the veterinarians at the clinic, Preston Roberts, recognized the dog. The Winston-Salem Journal on Wednesday had a front-page story about Jenkins' search for Boo'kie. The story said Boo'kie had one paw larger than the other, a result of frostbite when he was a puppy. The number to reach Jenkins was published with the story.

Earlier Wednesday, a friend of Jenkins' had seen the stolen truck parked behind an apartment complex in Rural Hall.

So Jenkins had gotten his truck back and had gone to have new keys made. When he got home, he got the call that Boo'kie might have been found, and he and his family rushed to the clinic.

Meanwhile, Roberts and the rest of the clinic staff doted on Boo'kie. They gave him a new collar to replace the one that had been thrown away. They implanted a microchip under his skin, so that if he went missing again, he'd be easy to find.

Jenkins was amazed.

"They done everything," he said, "and they charged me nothing."

Jenkins had offered a $500 reward for Boo'kie's safe return, and when he met Calvery at the clinic, he tried to give her the money.

But she wouldn't take it.

"She said I could donate it to the vet if I wanted to, so I put some money in their jar," he said. Then, Jenkins took Boo'kie to the Hardee's restaurant in Walkertown and bought him a cheeseburger.

Calvery said she couldn't accept Jenkins' money.

"I believe in paying things forward," she said. "And that clinic, they do it every day. They take care of so many animals and so many people."

And, she said, she believes that we all need to help one another. In the 10 months since she was laid off, she has cobbled together a living from part-time work, fighting to keep her life intact.

"You have to keep doing what you need to do to keep yourself together, but there are some days I feel so defeated, I feel like I'm struggling and swimming in a circle," she said. "Every once in a while, you need a day to say, 'We need to look out for one another and stop being so d--- selfish all the time.' And if it's a pup that brings people together, then so be it."

The lanky socialite and star of the Fox reality show "The Simple Life 2: Road Trip" was offering $5,000 reward for the dog, missing for a week, Tracy Shaffer confirmed. It was unclear how the dog managed to get away, and there was no information on where the dog turned up or if the reward was given.Posters for the pampered pet were displayed all over the West Hollywood area. But then the missing Chihuahua Tinkerbell has been found.

Now Paris has a new friend.

Conchita is at the Center of One of America's nastiest estate battles

A chihuahua is at the center of a fight over Posner heiress' will.

Her name is Conchita, a thin, spa-loving, diamond-draped heiress, and she's at the center of one of America's nastiest estate battles.

She is also a dog -- a chihuahua who was the favorite of the late Miami heiress Gail Posner, a daughter of the corporate takeover artist Victor Posner.

When Ms. Posner died in March at age 67, Conchita and two other dogs inherited the right to live in her seven-bedroom, $8.3 million Miami Beach mansion, their comfort ensured by a $3 million trust fund.

The canines weren't the only ones who benefited from Ms. Posner's munificence. Seven of her bodyguards, housekeepers and other personal aides were left a total of $26 million under her will, and some also were allowed to live, rent-free, in the mansion to care for the dogs.

Now, in an attempt to revoke the will, Ms. Posner's only living child, Bret Carr, has filed a lawsuit against a bevy of his mother's former staff members and advisers alleging a dark intrigue.

Household aides, he claims, drugged his sick mother with pain medications and conspired to steal her assets by inducing her to change her will and trust arrangements in 2008. Others, including his mother's trust attorney, he alleges, used their influence to bend her wishes. Mr. Carr, who was bequeathed a relatively paltry $1 million in his mother's will, makes the claims in a lawsuit filed last week in probate court in Miami-Dade County.

Among Mr. Carr's claims is that the aides directed a "deeply disturbed" Ms. Posner to hire a publicist to promote Conchita as "one of the world's most spoiled dogs" -- complete with a four-season wardrobe, full-time staff and diamond jewelry. Mr. Carr's lawyer, Bruce Katzen, says he believes the publicity campaign was part of a "ruse" to explain why a large trust fund was needed to care for the dogs.

It's too early to predict the outcome of the case. But Ray Madoff, a Boston College law professor and co-author of an estate-planning guide, says wills that leave little or nothing to legitimate heirs but millions to caretakers are usually thrown out by courts, as likely to have been written with "undue influence" by the caretakers.

The case has echoes of the late Leona Helmsley. In 2007, the New York real estate magnate left a $12 million trust fund to Trouble, her pet Maltese. A judge later cut that down to $2 million and directed the rest go to charity. Under the terms of Ms. Posner's trust, the mansion is to be sold after her dogs die, and the proceeds donated to charity.

But the Posner dispute has a grimmer backdrop. The clan has long been haunted by drug and alcohol addiction, claims of sexual abuse allegedly committed by Victor Posner and prior legal battles over the spoils of Mr. Posner's 1980s-era checkered career.

A master of the hostile takeover who became one of America's highest-paid executives, Mr. Posner pleaded no contest to tax evasion charges in 1987 and was later barred from involvement with public companies.

Mr. Carr, a Hollywood screenwriter and filmmaker, has his own troubled past. He was arrested in 1992, charged with counterfeiting traveler's checks. He received probation, and told The Wall Street Journal in 1994 that his grandfather severed all contact with him after the incident.

Mr. Carr also names as a defendant BNY Mellon, which helped oversee a trust that Mr. Posner established for his daughter in 1965. According to the complaint, the trust at one point was worth more than $100 million. It was terminated in 2008 and its remaining assets distributed to Ms. Posner.

A BNY Mellon spokeswoman said the bank "acted appropriately" as trustee, and plans to "vigorously defend" against the lawsuit. Martin Rosen, an attorney who was a trustee for the trust until shortly after Victor Posner's death in 2002, said that it held "in the area of $6 million" when he left his post and "never had $100 million or anything like it."

Mr. Carr's relationship with his mother is portrayed in the lawsuit as rocky, but he says they had a close relationship during "the sober phases of her life." He also says she variously told him that he would inherit her entire estate; half of her inheritance from Victor Posner; and a house next door to hers, also owned by the family.

According to the complaint, Ms. Posner had a "long history of paranoia" and was concerned about her security. She eventually hired several bodyguards. The lawsuit contends that these people, along with other domestic staff, allegedly conspired to isolate Ms. Posner from family members, proceeding to "brainwash" her into believing her son was out to kill her and only the staff could be trusted.

Ms. Posner allegedly told her son she was "being kidnapped by the staff who was trying to kill her."

Around this same period, Ms. Posner began publicizing her pampered pooch. In an interview with the Miami Herald in 2007, she said the dog's most precious possession was a Cartier necklace worth $15,000, but the dog choked on it and was refusing to wear it.

"Conchita is the only girl I know who doesn't consider diamonds her best friend," Ms. Posner was quoted as saying.

In a 2009 interview with a blogger for browardpalmbeach.com, Ms. Posner said Conchita typically accompanied her on lunch dates and then shopping. Ms. Posner said she at one point considered getting the dog her own Range Rover, for transportation to the animal's weekly spa appointments for manicures and pedicures, but Ms. Posner decided to get herself a new car and gave the dog her gold Cadillac Escalade, she told the blogger.

In 2008, already sick with cancer, Ms. Posner executed a new will and trust agreement, overseen by a New York lawyer, Sanford Schlesinger, who is named a defendant in the suit. Under the new arrangement, according to the lawsuit, Ms. Posner left $10 million to one bodyguard, $5 million to another and $2 million to a personal trainer.

A housekeeper and personal assistant, Queen Elizabeth Beckford, would receive $5 million if she agreed to care for Conchita and two other dogs, April Maria and Lucia, at the mansion "with the same degree of care" they received while Ms. Posner was alive, according to the trust established to distribute Ms. Posner's assets. Ms. Beckford also was given permission to live, rent-free, in Ms. Posner's Miami Beach mansion, along with her mother. Ms. Beckford's daughter, another assistant, received $1 million.

Reached at the Miami Beach mansion, Ms. Beckford declined to comment, saying "everything is confidential" before hanging up. Hernando Quintero, the bodyguard who inherited $10 million, could not be reached for comment. Orion Sewell, who was bequeathed $5 million, declined to comment.

An attorney representing Mr. Schlesinger and Gail Posner's trust declined to comment.

Ms. Posner left the remainder of her estate to charity, with one-quarter directed to animal shelters and the rest to breast cancer and suicide-prevention causes. She also left another request: that the canine-care staff also look after her pet turtles.

Personality

Chihuahua Momo - Japan's Newest Police Dog

Meet Japan's newest police dog - all 6.6 lb of her.

In what is a world first, a long-haired Chihuahua named 'Momo' has passed exams to become a police dog in the western Japanese prefecture of Nara.

The brown-and-white dog was one of 32 successful candidates out of 70 dogs, passing a search and rescue test by finding a person in five minutes after merely sniffing their cap.

'Any breed of dog can be entered to become a police dog in the search and rescue division,' said a Nara police spokesman.

But he admitted that news a Chihuahua had been entered may still come as a surprise to many.

'It's quite unusual,' he said.

Television footage showed the seven-year-old Momo bounding across grass or sitting proudly, long hair blowing in the breeze.

Momo will be used for rescue operations in case of disasters such as earthquakes, in the hope that she may be able to squeeze her tiny frame into places too narrow for more usual rescue dogs, which tend to be German Shepherds.

The public response to the news of Momo's selection took police by surprise, the spokesman said, adding: 'The phone's been ringing all afternoon.'

'It's quite rare for us to have a chihuahua work as a police dog,' the spokeswoman said.

Chihuahuas, named after a Mexican state, are the smallest breed of dog.

'We would like it to work hard by taking advantage of its small size,' a Nara police department official told the Sankei Shimbun daily.

A Chihuahua's oddly curved back and legs and closed-up left eye earned the 4-year-old rescue dog top honors at the World's Ugliest Dog contest at a Northern California fair on Friday.

Sporting a gray, brown and black coat, Princess Abby Francis beat a rough-looking slate of candidates for the prize, including Pabst, a teeth-bearing boxer mix who won last year.

Princess Abby shivered in the cool breeze after her win Friday night while nestled in the arms of her owner, Kathleen Francis, who received a $1,000 check at the 22nd annual contest held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma.

The victory was a surprise to Francis.

"I don't think she's ugly at all," she said. "I think she's the most beautiful dog."

Francis says she adopted Princess Abby from her veterinarian about five months ago. This was the dog's first such contest since she was found running through the street.

Celebrity vet Karen "Doc" Halligan says the Chihuahua's problematic back, legs and eye may be due to being inbred.

"She's a poster child to spay and neuter your pets," she said.

Contest judges included Halligan, Vertical Horizon lead singer Matt Scannell, "That 70's Show" actress Christina Moore and fair board member Brian Sobel.

The colour and texture of your dog is going to have a bearing on the names you consider. "Honey" suggests a honey-coloured bitch and Jet would seem to be a black dog - although he may just be a very fast agility dog!

Many people will probably argue that Paula Abdul’s career took a nosedive a long time ago and never recovered, not even after she became a judge on American Idol. And some people might say it happened because she became a judge on American Idol. We say it happened because she thought Opposites Attract was a good and marketable idea.

But really, we can tell you that her life definitely went to the dogs - and not even all the dogs, just a tiny Chihuahua named Tulip - when she tripped, fell and broke her nose on Saturday while trying to avoid tripping and falling over Tulip.

We find that drinking a bit too much also makes us fall and trip exactly when we are trying our best not to fall and trip. Clumsy us. And no, we’re not implying that Paula was plied with alcohol during the incident, because we’d never waste our time assuming that which we believe to be factual and true.

But whatever caused Paula’s spill, we think it was totally unnecessary for her to fall and then blame it on her tiny little dog. She should’ve just come right out and admitted that she really wanted to get a nose job.

Hurley from 'LOST' lost his Chihuahua

Sad news for Lost fans. Jorge Garcia (he played Hurley on "Lost") claims the island has taken another life ... and this time it's his precious Chihuahua Nunu.

"It breaks my heart to tell you that yesterday as we were preparing to all go to the airport Nunu was struck by a car as she crossed the street. She died in my arms.

We are burying her in the Pet Garden at Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe. Nunu hated the water so we couldn't bring ourselves to having her ashes scattered in the ocean. Three months from now you'll be able to find a bronze plaque inscribed with just her name there. If you'd like to leave a flower or a toy, I'm sure she'd love it.

Please understand that I have turned off commenting on this blog because I really can't deal with approving them all. I did go through and label the posts that feature her should you want to go through them.

We love and miss her very much.

Chihuahuas are the smallest dogs in the world, and take their name from Chihuahua, Mexico, where they were discovered in the mid-19th century. These dogs are thought to be descended from Chinese dogs which came over the land bridge from Asia thousands of years ago. The first chihuahua was registered with the American Kennel Club around the turn of the last century.

You can recognize a chihuahua by it's big eyes and ears and tiny bodies. There are two coat varieties - the smooth, glossy short coat that's more familiar, and a long, soft variation. Chihuahuas of both types come in a number of different colors, from white, fawn and brown to black, blue brindle, chocolate and tan. These little dogs are known for loyalty, fierce devotion, and a ferocious manner for such a tiny dog. They mostly become attached to one or two people, and are extremely protective of them.

Chihuahuas are suitable for most environments, but they're bad with kids or other pets. They tend to attack larger animals, and may bite when scared. They also tend to be alarmed by strangers. However, a chihuahua is an excellent only dog in a small apartment, since they won't have problems with exercise the way a larger pet might. Training your chihuahua is important if you want to avoid the stereotypical high strung pet.

Chihuahuas can be hard to train at first - you need to be patient and committed. A lot of intensive socialization from an early age is required, and you'll need to provide plenty of reinforcement for good behavior. Chihuahuas can suffer from a number of veterinary problems, so you'll have to pay close attention to health and behavior. These little dogs can quickly become obese and diabetic if overfed, and an obese chihuahua may also have respiratory and joint problems due to weight. Dental care is also important.

These little dogs' large eyes can lead to them suffering from eye trouble, and infrequent feedings may lead to blood sugar problems. Keep an eye on your chihuahua to make sure he or she is in good health. You don't need to worry about your chihuahua trembling, however. This is a common behavior in excited dogs, not a health problem. Well cared for chihuahuas will live as long as eighteen years.

Regular grooming is important, too. If you have a short haired chihuahua, use a natural bristle brush to distribute oils and remove dead hair, and a flea comb to remove these pests. A long haired will need a wide toothed comb or pin brush and regular grooming. If mats develop, use a detangler, and pay a lot of attention to the eyes and ears of your little dog. Shedding chihuahua should be groomed every day to help remove excess fur. You may need to trim fur on your chihuahua's feet to prevent slipping.

The American Kennel Club Chihuahua standard lists under color: "Any color-Solid, marked or splashed". This allows for all colors from solid blacks to solid whites, spotted, sabled, or a variety of other colors and patterns. A few examples are Fawn, Red, Cream, Chocolate, Blue, and Black. Merle coloring is a spotted coat. Patterns, all with or without white markings, include:

The merle coat pattern is not traditionally considered part of the breed standard. It is associated with genetic diseases usually associated with inbreeding in other breeds. The United Kingdom Kennel Club decided in May 2007 not to register puppies with "Merle coat color in dogs" coloration due to the health risks associated with the gene responsible, and in December of that year formally amended the Breed Standard to say "Any color or mixture of colors but never merle (dapple)." Other countries' Kennel Clubs; including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany have also disqualified merle. However, in May 2008 the Chihuahua Club of America voted that merles will not be disqualified in the United States and they are fully registrable and able to compete in all American Kennel Club (AKC) events. Opponents of recognizing merle dogs in the breed standards suspect the coloration came about by modern genetic cross-breeding with other dogs, and not via natural genetic drift.

Classifying Chihuahua colors can be complicated due to the large number of possibilities. Examples would be a blue brindle or a chocolate and tan. Colors and patterns can combine and affect each other, resulting in a very high degree of variation. The classic Chihuahua color remains fawn. No color or pattern is considered more valuable than the others, although blue is considered rare.

Woman Charged with Killing Chihuahua

Well, not all the news are good.
FRIDLEY, Minn. (AP) — Prosecutors in eastern Minnesota have charged a woman with animal cruelty for throwing her Chihuahua puppy against a dresser, killing the dog.

Police say 28-year-old Holly Boyd of Fridley told investigators she threw the dog at the dresser after getting upset with the puppy for urinating on her and her couch last week. She told police the dog hit the handle area of the dresser and went limp.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press says a conviction carries up to two years in prison.

Another very practical point which is often overlooked when choosing dog names is that the dog mustn't be confused by his name.

At the higher levels of obedience competition your dog will be on the ball and can easily anticipate your commands - especially if he's a Border Collie! So if you say "Sssam ... down," you may find that Sssam has sssat instead and you've just lost five marks.

If you're getting a dog with a view to competition obedience, you'd better check the usual commands with an experienced handler. You can't change dog names mid-dog!

   Awesome Sandra Bullock became more awesome for Chihuahua lovers – she Chihuahua named Ruby, an adorable two-legged Chihuahua she rescued from a shelter in Long Beach several years ago. After the adoption Sandra said, “we now have a dog with just two legs, she walks on her hind legs. She was born with like a little flipper here and a little flipper here, she’s like a little dinosaur, a velociraptor.”
   “She’s got the best posture. she goes up the stairs only we haven’t taught her how to go down yet – that’s sort of like face plant central, and you don’t wanna laugh. She just gets so excited; she takes off,” she added.

   Bullock also said that cute little ruby has most certainly brightened up her life and that, “any dog that is missing something is welcome in our house.”

   Speaking to reporters recently backstage after the golden globe awards, bullock also said that her dogs go everywhere they go, after all, who’s going to walk a two-legged dog?

   Sandra and husband also adopted a three-legged Chihuahua-pomeranian named Poppy from the same shelter that Ruby was rescued from.

New Chihuahua Clothes By Yourself - Knitting A Sweater

Now, we continue with another one Chihuahua sweater pattern that you can knit by yourself to gladden your little pet this winter. Sweater is suitable for a Chihuahua or other tiny dog.
This will fit a dog weighing between 3 and 6 pounds.

MATERIALS:

Hook: Size G.

Yarn: 4ply worsted weight yarn.

Stitches used: ch, sl st, hdc.

Difficulty: Easy (since there are no leg holes to shape)

RND 1: Using a G hook ch 40, join with sl st being careful not to twist the chain. Ch2, hdc in next ch and in ea ch around. Join with sl st in top of beg ch2. Ch 2. DO NOT TURN

RND 2 -7: Hdc in next st and in ea st around. Join with sl st in top of beg ch 2. CH2. DO NOT TURN

RND 8: Sl st in next 10 sts, ch 2, hdc in next 19 sts (20 including beg ch 2) ch 2 TURN

ROWS 9-13: Hdc in ea hdc, ch 2, TURN.

RND 14: Hdc in ea hdc, ch 10. DO NOT TURN. Join with sl st to opposite side of row just completed, ch 2

RND 15: Hdc in ea st and ch around, ch 2 DO NOT TURN

RND 16-17: Repeat Rnd 15.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

You can use a 4 ply worsted weight yarn. To make this smaller or larger use the same directions but use a smaller or larger hook. A smaller hook and sport weight yarn will make a smaller sweater also. If one needs a longer sweater extra rows/rnds can be added in rows 9-13 and/or rnds 2-7 and/or 16-17.

If the neck part looks like it might be too tight to add a couple of chains to rnd 14.

Chihuahua Adopts Baby Rabbits at Flintshire Rescue Centre

Did you know that Chihuahua is a very kind dog, a really friendly creature? If not, just read the following news!
A LITTER of orphaned wild rabbits have found an unlikely foster parent at an animal rescue centre – a male chihuahua.

The three-day-old babies were uncovered in a compost heap last week and are too small to fend for themselves.

They are now being hand-reared by Sheila Stewart, owner of Capricorn Animal Rescue in Flintshire, with help from surrogate father Mitch.

Sheila said: “A man brought the litter in along with their nest after he found them when he moved a compost heap.

“They are tiny and I am feeding them every few hours with milk through a syringe.

“After I’ve finished feeding them, Mitch comes along and washes and grooms each one. He seems to have adopted them.”

Two-year-old Mitch, who was brought in to the Padeswood centre when he was just six months old, has been unable to find a home because of his tendency to chew everything around him – except baby rabbits it seems.

Sheila added: “He eats and chews absolutely anything he can find – feathers, cloths and even razorblades. I have had to take him to the vet so many times, I’ve been told he’ll glow in the dark if he has any more x-rays.

“Because of that, we have to keep a constant watch on him to make sure he’s not up to no good, which is quite demanding. He was traumatised when he was brought in and terrified of men, but he is a really loving dog now. He is a real character and is so good with all the other animals.”

Mitch will be able to look after his adopted babies for another few weeks and then they will be released back into the wild.

“I will feed them until they are big enough to feed themselves and then we will stop handling them,” said Sheila.

“That way, they remain wild and will be able to look after themselves when we release them at about eight or nine weeks old. It is quite common for us at this time of year to take in litters of wild rabbits, because their nests get disturbed when people are cleaning up gardens.”

Sheila is also trying to a find homes for three four-month- old collie cross puppies, who were about to be shot by a farmer. She said: “He had bred them and no-one wanted them, so he was just going to kill them. One had four legs but only three feet.

“It’s disgusting that people breed dogs for greed then just get rid of them when they are no longer of any use.”

Day-long Dog Event Recognizes Hurricane Katrina Rescues

In a playful romp across the San Lorenzo Park Benchlands on Saturday, more than 30 dogs rescued from Hurricane Katrina by the Santa Cruz SPCA were recognized during a commemorative parade.

The parade kicked off the first Dog Days of Summer 2010: Katrina Remembered event held five years after Operation Just Paws saved more than 100 cats and dogs from the hurricane-ravaged homes and shelters of Louisiana.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation, a nonprofit run by the 88-year-old actress, donated most of the money required to airlift the 100 dogs and cats -- about $24,000.

"It's so good to see them again because when they left us they were not in the greatest health," SPCA Executive Director Lisa Carter said. "They really filled out and their coats are nice and fluffy. I'm so grateful to the SPCA, all of the vendors, volunteers and staff. This is our first annual event and we made it happen together."

Throughout the day, nearly 400 people, families and their dogs enjoyed singing and howling contests, "doggie freestyle dancing" and a "Dressed to the K-9s" fashion show.

Filbert, a white chiweenie, and Joey, a black and brown Chihuahua mix, showed off their best dresses on the runway for as long as their attention span allowed.

"They'll never make it in the fashion world," said Sarah Mouth, their owner and a Bed and Biscuits employee. "We'll have to find a new career."

Mouth's Bed and Biscuits co-worker, Meghan Jenkins, was thrilled to see the Katrina rescues doing so well after she helped take care of them when they first arrived.

"The hard work was worth the time," Jenkins said. "All the animals were adopted and placed into new loving homes. It's so nice to see them again."

A few lucky dogs up for adoption through the SPCA also found homes by the end of the day and others were scheduled to be picked up later in the week.

"We're really the little shelter that could," Carter added.

As an owner, you must be very sensitive to the fact that short-haired Chihuahuas, and even long-haired ones, are very vulnerable to the cold. It is not recommended to walking your Chihuahua in temperatures of 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit (~ 1-4 °C) without a special dog sweater. Walking your Chihuahua when it is even colder is strongly discouraged, especially when there is a wind-chill factor. In some cold regions, an indoor heater will be necessary to keep your Chi comfortable.

The bacteria in the uterus from the infection can cause the death of both the mother and her pups if not treated in time. If you notice pus mixed with a blood discharge before or after delivery it may very well be acute metritis and you will need to get your pet to a veterinarian immediately. Other warning signs of acute metritis include excessive urination, vomiting, or the motherâ€™s refusal to nurse or eat.

Your Chihuahua mother may suffer from hypoglycemia... where her blood sugar drops so low that she can go into shock, seizures and possible death. Her pups may suffer from hypoglycemia as well.

Shortly after whelping (giving birth) the brood bitch may suffer from Eclampsia also known as hypocalcemia, or canine milk fever. The common signs of this disease include: in coordination, panting, twitching of the eye, and severe muscles spasms. When this happens it is imperative that your dog been seen by the veterinarian.

Momo competed against golden retrievers and German shepherds to win a place as a contract police dog

A chihuahua named Momo (Peach) has passed the exam to become a dog in the police force in western Japan, in what seems to be a first.

The 3kg (6.6lb) dog is set to become part of a search-and-rescue team used for disasters such as earthquakes.

Its small size means it will be able to squeeze into places too narrow for dogs such as German Shepherds.

Chihuahuas, named after a Mexican state, are one of the the smallest breeds of dog.

"It's quite rare for us to have a chihuahua work as a police dog," said a police spokeswoman in Nara, western Japan.

"We would like it to work hard by taking advantage of its small size."

Momo, aged seven, began work in January.

Getting Your Chihuahua To Stay In A Stroller

   Like everything else, the basics are those three P's. When your Chihuahua is first put in the stroller, it can become a little nervous and maybe it’ll want to jump out when it is moved. But, through lots of practice, praise, and patience, it will love riding in style! But, it's not always that easy.

   • You could start out be getting your dog used to a box or dog bed the size of the stroller. With the box or bed starting on the floor, gradually raise it off the floor by putting flat objects (books, bricks, etc) underneath. You might want to do this in several sessions with play time in between.

   • If you don't have a bed or box the size of the stroller, just put your dog's favorite bed or blanket with some toys and/or treats in the stroller.

   • If the stroller folds down, have your dog get into it while it is still folded up. That way it is close to the ground and will make your dog feel more comfortable in it. Praise, praise, praise, then treats and toys before more lovin'. But, don't wait until your Chihuahua is done to praise and make it fun. You want being in the stroller to be fun, not getting out of it. Remember, keep the sessions short, so it won't wear out or stress your dog.

   • If folding the stroller down isn't possible, you can just put your dog in the stroller just as it is. The main thing is, don't move the stroller in the beginning. That can really scare the dog and make it not want to try again. Remember, this is a fun activity for you and your dog!

   • Once your dog is comfortable in the stroller, you can slowly start to move it. Move it a little, praise, then praise as you move it some more. If your dog jumps out, start back with him just sitting in it. You may find that to have a second person petting, giving treats and lovin' to your dog as you push the stroller slowly may help. It will get the dog's mind off of the moving aspect. Also, depending on what you've already done (training), it might be an indication (if he jumps out) that your dog has had enough for one day or session.

   Remember that practice makes perfect, so your dog won't become your dream dog overnight. It will take lots of practice, praise and patience. But if you are determined and keep at it, you might just end up with your dream dog after all! Keep up the good work and don't give up! That's one way to let your dog known that You are boss, not him.

Hand-Made Chihuahua Clothes

   Let us introduce you a great gift idea for your little four-footed friend. It's Christmas time coming soon, so it's a reason to make a present with yours own hands. It's not easy to always buy Chihuahua clothes, but it is easy enough to make it yourself.

      MATERIALS:

   Sizes 5 and 7 knitting needles.
   Worsted wool, about 4 ounces.

      LET'S GO:

   Measure your pet's neck. I usually use a size 5 or 6 needle for a tightly knit ribbing (not too tight!). Wylie's neck is 10", and I cast on, loosely, 40 or 42 stitches.

   Knit 1x1, or 2x2 ribbing for 3" for a mock neck, or 6" or 7" for a turtleneck.

   Change to a size 7 needle, and commence in the stitch of your choice. After you've knit one or two of these, you can see how easy it is to add cables, colourwork, or other texture stitches in this back area. For the first one, let's knit in my favourite basic stitch, garter. That is, knit every row! Can't beat it for simplicity, stability, and rustic good looks.

   Measure the animal's back length, that is, from the back of his neck, just above the shoulder, to the top of his tail. That's how long you will knit straight, in garter stitch. That's right!, No shaping yet! When you have reached 2" short of the correct length, switch to size 5 needles, and knit 2" of the same rib you used for the neck. In garter stitch, this isn't really necessary, but looks good, and if you use another stitch, it keeps the edge from curling. If you used another stitch, you should also have knit the first 4 stitches of every row, to keep the side edges from curling. Bind off.

   Now, we will knit the chest piece. Using the size 5 needles, cast on 3 stitches. You will increase 2 stitches every other row, until you reach the width comparable to the distance between your pets’ front legs. You should increase 1 stitch 2 stitches from each edge. The magic thing about this is that is usually exactly the length you need to cover that tiny chest. It's really amazing! Now: for a male, knit straight until you get to 1" shorter that where the ribcage stops, and add 1" of ribbing, bind off. For a female, you can knit as long as the body of the sweater, to cover her bald little stomach. (ending with 2" of ribbing, just like the back.) Bind off. The reason I usually knit this piece on the smaller needles, is, it has a tendency to get wet in the snow, and stretch. A slightly smaller gauge helps. If you’re not using garter stitch, knit the first 4 stitches of every row.

      FINISHING:

   (8) Seam the neck ribbing, remembering to seam halfway, and switch to the inside, if you've made a turtleneck. Now, place the point of the chest piece at the bottom of the neck rib seam, and sew a seam down both sides, until you get to the point where you stopped increasing. Leave a slit for the front legs there, about 2" long, and continue the princess seams down each side. Tuck in your loose ends, wash and block carefully.

      COMMENTS:

   Don't forget to experiment with your favourite stitches. I highly recommend using natural fibbers like wool, alpaca or cashmere.

Complications with Pregnancy and Delivery

Since these dogs are so tiny, it does not come as a surprise that the average litter is two pups. Chihuahuas can have as little as one pup and as many as four.

Bear in mind that even though the litters are not large stillborn births are common. Your female may require an emergency caesarian section. There is always the threat that the mother (brood bitch) will not make it through the surgery.

Chihuahua pups have large heads. Their heads may be too big to naturally pass through the female birthing canal. You may need to monitor the birth. If there are any signs of distress, or prolonged delivery, contact your veterinarian.

Another point to consider is that Chihuahuas often have breech births. You will need immediate access to the veterinarian or have one available to guide you through the process of delivering (whelping) the pups in worst case scenarios.

Chihuahuas were first discovered in the early 19th century along the border of Mexico and Arizona and were first called Arizona dogs.
